Where are all the women?

By Molly Siobhan Parker

The day I was told I might be autistic I had a big fat juicy meltdown (very on brand!) my heart was racing, breath shaking, my chest pounding like Travis Barker was beating it with his drum sticks. I was confused.

There was no guide, nothing to look to or reference. I hadn’t seen myself in famous autistic characters like Raymond Babbitt (Rain Man) Christopher Boone (Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night Time) or Sam Gardner (Atypical.) I tried to picture myself as one of those characters but I couldn’t. I’m chatty, outgoing, not good or remotely interested in maths or science and oh yeah…

Biodiversity

By Caroline Osella

I heard David Attenborough on the TV –

Says the planet needs diversity.

Multiplicity, complexity, plurality of form

Makes the norm

For the ecosphere,

It seems.

Schooltime Cacophony

By Katz

Tap. Tap. SNAP.

Down comes the ruler to desk.

Eagle eyes assume my inattention.

Pursed lip sneer at my confusion.

What was her question?

Monday’s child loses face.

Fairness isn’t in this place.

Whee. Whee. TWEET.

Roots

By Emma Clowsley

She’s grown roots but this vase is too small to hold,

stifling them, leaving th...

A Protodontopteryx Robot

By Xeno

I kick at the sand. But then the stomp of my feet fades as the music does. With one movement I pull the mask from my eyes with a sigh. Let it drop to the beach to collect on my return. The stars fill the sky as patterns in the night, but I am too distracted by our conversation to appreciate them. I ...

Monkeys of Three

By Katz

Born with the cord wrapped around my neck, blue to a new world.

Indifferent to my silence, you left my care to the hands of others.

Caretakers driven by coin, empty smiles that didn’t reach their eyes.

Hidden bruises covered in taffeta and silk.

Stand up straight and smile for th...

A Mudlark's Mourning

By Xeno

It is barely six in the morning, and the acrid mist already hangs low enough to obscure the dome of St Paul’s. The sky is only set to thicken as an ever increasing amount of coal fires are lit; perhaps ten per household in freshly blackened grates. There is no wind to carry the fumes, so all is stil...

I am Yenn

Simply a name. My name.

New, different, wonderful

Borne out of Yearning

Of striving for identity

That ongoing discovery of the unlikely and intriguing country which is me

The true description of my self
